Indonesia, Hohidiai
transforming lives in Indonesia
Hohidiai (meaning "to restore” in the local Tobelo language) is an Indonesian Christian organisation with a burden to share the love of God through practical care in Halmahera. Hohidiai was previously named YBI/Bless Indonesia Today.
The genesis of the medical and clean water programs of Hohidiai was the response of leadership to the suffering of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) who had fled religious persecution. They had sought refuge in North Sulawesi after thousands had died in Maluku and Central Sulawesi.
Practical care was offered by Hohidiai personnel who mobilised international assistance. Funds were raised to pay for medical teams. One of the nurses, Australian Esther Scarborough, later returned with her husband Peter, to join the ministry among internally displaced people. Esther pioneered the School of Health Care Workers so that trained health workers could provide support for IDPs once they returned to their home villages, particularly in North Maluku. Peter has supervised the drilling of wells to provide clean water as well as managing the medical program.
Training of medical personnel is a high priority. Regional clinics see up to 1,000 patients per month.
Our staff regularly lead short term teams to partner with Hohidiai in Maluku.
