DR Congo, Ephphatha School For The Deaf

transforming lives in DR Congo

A project that began under a tree with 5 deaf-mute children in 1994 has now grown to over 196 children. They come from North Kivu province and are provided with primary and high-school education. Adult deaf-mutes are given the opportunity to receive vocational training. The establishment of the Ephphatha School and Centre provides a haven for those formerly rejected by society.

The Principal, Charmant Mututa, heads the team of 17 dedicated staff. All teaching is in sign language. The students are taught the Government’s curriculum requirements. Other subjects like hand and machine sewing for girls and woodworking and carpentry for boys equip the students for a future in North Kivu society.

Unlike at the start of this ministry, the school no longer has to seek out deaf students who are being hidden by parents because of the stigma of their disability. The parents know the school and its good reputation and are now bringing their children to the campus.
