transforming lives in Indonesia
Bridge of Hope (BOH) is a Christian development organisation working with families trapped in poverty in the Manado region of North Sulawesi, East Indonesia. By assisting family businesses and facilitating community support programs, Bridge of Hope seeks to empower communities to build a better future. Bridge of Hope was initiated in response to the command of Jesus Christ to love the poor and oppressed, regardless of religion or race. Bridge of Hope seeks to be a practical expression of God's love and concern for the needs of all people.
Micro-enterprise Development (MED) was chosen as a vehicle to help these displaced people to help themselves. MED is the provision of loans, financial services, training and technical assistance to develop micro-enterprises.
In July 2006 BOH had over 2000 clients comprising 110 lending groups with a 95% repayment rate. By 2008 more than 5000 clients have been helped with micro-loans. There are more than 50 staff in the Manado head office and branch offices in Bitung and Tobelo. A new branch will be opening soon in Kawangkoan. More than half of the staff are project officers working directly with the loan recipients.
Manly-Manado (formerly Action Against Poverty) is a Sydney-based support group which raises funds for Bridge of Hope activities.
