Uganda, Mothers' Union Mbale

transforming lives in Uganda

Mothers’ Union (MU) Mbale is an affiliate of the world wide organisation that started in Uganda in 1908. MU aims at demonstrating Christian faith in action by engaging in activities geared at transforming communities though prayer and practical action. Members are united and committed to supporting marriages and family life. Mbale District has a population of 721,000. The district capital, Mbale, is Uganda’s third largest city with a population of 70,000.

MU Mbale is governed by a board of ten dynamic women who are appointed from within the Anglican churches of the area. The Union represents eight churches either in or associated with the St Andrew’s cathedral parish. The total number of church attendees is 8000.

The activities currently being carried out include support for 15 vulnerable children in school; a tailoring school which has so far trained 120 young girls and enabled them to earn a living; running four nursery schools to give children a Christian foundation; construction of a house for the elderly who have nowhere to stay; and visitation to schools, hospitals and prisons. They regularly address 450 school girls to equip them with life skills and visit 750 men and women in the local prison.

The Union members meet every Monday for prayer and planning.

Future plans include construction of a girls’ hostel (for which the land has already been purchased); training marriage counsellors; encouraging parents to develop the faith of their children; support for HIV/AIDS sufferers; and rehabilitation of homes of poor people.

As the Mothers’ Union says in its submission: “We believe that, if a family is empowered, it can then empower the next family. Communities worldwide are made up of families. The people to be served will therefore include the women/men, children (in and out of school), elderly (both men and women), youths (both in school and outside), orphans, widows, street children, and Sunday school, in addition to the hospitalised, prisoners and those in difficult circumstances.”
