Uganda, Wakisa Ministries
transforming lives in Uganda
Wakisa Ministries was born out of a vision for young women with unwanted pregnancies in Uganda. It grew to embrace other young people traumatised by wars and strife in Uganda and the Great Lakes Region. Wakisa literally means “God is merciful” and so the Ministry was set up to be a vehicle of the love, compassion and mercy of the Lord to these vulnerable young women.
The Wakisa Ministries commenced in April 2004 and was the expression of the Director, Mrs Vivian Kityo and her friends’ desire to focus on the needs of young people. In her capacity as Director of Youth for Christ in Uganda, Vivian had been involved in establishing and managing a pregnancy crisis centre. She felt God calling her to focus entirely on the areas of ministry profiled by Wakisa and expand the work to reach more young people and take it beyond Kampala.
Wakisa Ministries is a non government, non-profit Christian organisation. Situated on Namirembe Road, Kampala, it is a caring ministry that offers counselling to young girls (aged 13-19) with unwanted pregnancies. These girls have been rejected and abandoned by their families. They are offered temporary shelter, excellent ante-natal care and are trained in vocational skills. The objective is to reconcile and reintegrate the teenage mothers in their families and their schools.
You can support this significant ministry by fundraising for the construction of a new centre; joining a short term team to help out in person; and praying for our national partners who live out their faith in this very practical way, day by day.
One Sydney-based group has even set up their own website to publicise the needs of Wakisa. Click here to view.
