Madagascar, Anglican Diocese of Antsiranana

transforming lives in Madagascar

The northern region of Madagascar, where the Anglican Diocese of Antsiranana is located, is among the poorest regions of the Indian Ocean. There are still many vulnerable people living below the poverty line, most crowded in small tin shacks without electricity or sewerage, and having to share common water distribution points. Much of the Diocese comprises isolated forested areas with poor roads and little infrastructure. The situation has been exacerbated by 20 years of economic mismanagement from 1972, and a tenuous return to democracy in 1993.

Rt. Rev. Roger Chung, invited from Mauritius to be a missionary bishop in 2003, leads a small Anglican presence among a population which is 30% protestant. In rural and remote areas, half of the population follows traditional Malagasy folk religion, so the challenge is to mobilise church attendees for mission. Pastoral visiting requires extended absence from home, using a dilapidated vehicle on rough forest roads.

The diocese depends on voluntary staff, so the Bishop is often involved in time-consuming clerical and administrative work. He is also committed to the restoration and enlargement of a small cathedral. There are qualified pastoral workers who are unable to be supported locally.

Practical initiatives within local communities include a nutrition program for mothers and children from poor families and student hostel accommodation.
