Bangalore City Mission
transforming lives in India
The vision of Bangalore City Mission (BCM) is to build strong communities who can provide for themselves, educate people so that they can be empowered and enable them to live long, creative and healthy lives. BCM runs many programs as well as the school which is the focus of CNEC Partners International support. Their programs include a centre for women in crisis, health care programs, community capacity building programs and income generation programs.
Sinclairs High School started in 1990 in the home of Paul and Violet Raj, with a few small children who were working in the dangerous environment of a rock quarry. Dynamite blasting and very poor safety measures threatened their young lives. Mrs Violet Paul used to bring the children to the school in her house and teach them. She also used to bathe them, cut their hair, clip their nails and buy them books to learn.
Initially, the children’s parents objected because these children contributed to their families’ income. Their earnings were used by the parents to drink. (Alcoholism is rampant in this community of laborers who work for daily wages). The mission encountered a lot of difficulty but persevered.
The Community School that was started in 1990 now has 150 children and in its history has educated over 700 children, most of whom are from the quarry and all of them from below the poverty line. There has been a dramatic change in the minds of people from the rock quarry. Now all their children go to school instead of breaking gravel and rock. They all carry books instead of a shovel and hammers. BCM believes a child has the right to a school environment that is free of gender bias and is safe, effective, healthy and protective.
